Tum-A-Lum Lumber traces its history back to 1906 when it helped build the earliest communities throughout the Pacific Northwest. Today, the fourth-generation family company has three locations in Hood River, The Dalles, and Pendleton, Oregon.

Seizing New Opportunity
While Hood River has always been on the outskirts of the greater Portland area, it has become extremely popular in recent years for its world-class recreation opportunities and is linked to the city more than ever. Tum-A-Lum CEO David Dittmer saw tremendous business growth potential as the community began attracting new development and an influx of homeowners. Using the company's strong relationship with Do it Best Corp. to its full advantage, Tum-A-Lum recently opened a 10,000-square-foot destination showroom designed to appeal to the pros and attract more retail customers.

Part of the Landscape
The most distinctive feature of the new showroom is its entire wall of glass, which provides a breathtaking view of the Columbia River. It complements the store's contemporary, well-lit interior and, as David points out, "It gives the impression of being outdoors."

Building on Success
Tum-A-Lum Lumber was already a very well-established LBM supplier to builders and contractor customers across the region. With the new showroom, the company is extending its reach to homeowners and growing its retail brand. To continually accomplish this, David and his team rely on Do it Best Corp. as the only single-source LBM solution that also offers more than 67,000 SKUs of hardlines merchandise. For the new showroom, Tum-A-Lum added 3,500 SKUs, expanding its plumbing, electrical, hardware, and tool departments and added new categories like lighting fixtures. The showroom also features a larger paint department and expanded selections of doors, windows, and cabinets.

Accent on Service
To accommodate the influx of new retail customers, David restructured staff member responsibilities and added positions to ensure there are knowledgeable, dedicated employees in each department throughout the store's newly extended hours.

Eyes on the Future

With the success of the Hood River showroom, David says the company is actively evaluating the expansion of their other locations to better serve DIYers. "Business growth is our primary objective," says David. "And being part of Do it Best Corp. puts us in a strategic position to grow our service to homeowners throughout our communities."
