Rob Gardiner's parents started Damariscotta Hardware in Damariscotta, Maine, in 1955, and from the beginning they sought opportunities for growth. Rob and his siblings took over the company in 1996 and left their previous co-op to join Do it Best Corp., knowing they were better aligned to support his family's aggressive growth strategies. That choice was immediately validated through the successful opening of a new larger store relocated a half-mile up the road.
Serving a New Community
With their new store up and running, Rob and his sister Susan soon maxed out the growth potential in Damariscotta, so with guidance from Do it Best Corp., they began evaluating other nearby towns for a second location. One day while driving through Randolph, they spotted an available lot on a corner with high traffic volume. After acquiring and preparing the property for ground-up construction, Do it Best Corp. helped them realize their vision with a comprehensive market and site analysis and a favorable member financing program.
Becoming the Area's Best Retailer
Rob knew from the beginning that he’d be relying on the expertise of the SignatureTM Store Design team to create a premier retail location in his new market. He was also depending on the many Do it Best Corp. exclusive products to set his store apart from the competition, such as the professional quality line of Channellock® branded hand tools. His goal was to provide everything a professional contractor would need to complete a project, so he embraced fasteners, paint, electrical, plumbing, and exclusive products from Milwaukee® and Stihl®.
Positioned for Future Growth
Rob also faced the challenge of growing a customer base from scratch, since there was no previous store at that location. But he didn’t have to do it alone. He turned to Do it Best Corp. menu-based programs for a comprehensive marketing game plan that included cost-effective, fully customizable circulars and other advertising components, along with a robust customer loyalty program. The Randolph location opened in 2015, and Rob is very pleased with the results. Choosing the new location has paid off, as he’s attracting both local pros and DIYers who commute past his store to the larger city of Augusta. And he's well positioned to take his business to the next location, as soon as the next opportunity arises.
"Whether it's attending a market, taking advantage of ongoing retail education, or simply talking with our territory manager, Do it Best Corp. is always bringing us great ideas and best practices to help us grow and expand our family business."
