In 2017, member-owner Scott Moore earned recognition for his business success by being named an Entrepreneur of the Year by LBM Journal, a leading industry publication. Scott started his career humbly in his early 20s at a match factory in southern Virginia, and today, his Patrick Building Supply is a growing state-of-the-art lumberyard and home improvement store.

Starting from Scratch
Scott's father had worked for years as a brick mason. Experiencing the challenges of the construction industry firsthand, he discouraged his son from entering the field. Nonetheless, Scott saw opportunities in construction that he didn't see working in a factory, so he took the leap and began working on projects with area contractors to gain experience and learn the industry. Soon enough, he decided to launch his own business, performing home improvement and small residential construction throughout the region. Before long, thanks to his demonstrated dedication to quality and his strong work ethic, he grew into a full-service home builder serving the region.

An Entrepreneurial Spark
As his homebuilding business grew, Scott recognized the need for a proper retail hardware location to serve both pro contractors like himself as well as DIY customers. There was one store in Stuart at the time, Patrick Building Supply, but it was outdated and inadequate for much of the community’s needs. Moore negotiated a deal to assume ownership of the store and its existing inventory, providing him an entry into the retail hardware industry. From there, he and his team really got to work.

Almost immediately, the Patrick Building Supply team recognized that the existing store was not a viable long-term solution. They set about planning for a new, ground-up location nearby. Together, with their growth-focused partner at Do it Best Corp., they identified a prime location on a main highway leading into and out of Stuart, providing plenty of visibility and lots of traffic. Using the expertise of the Signature™ Store Design team, they built a state-of-the-art, 10,000-square-foot home improvement store, finding almost immediate success in offering a comprehensive retail hardware selection.

Taking the Next Step
Even as the new location succeeded in meeting an important hardlines need in the community, Scott recognized another opportunity. Fueled in large part by his homebuilding insights and experience, he zeroed in on the need for a more robust LBM presence in town. He leveraged the lot space surrounding his new store to grow his inventory and selection of lumber and building materials, integrating them seamlessly into the overall customer experience.

Building on Momentum
Patrick Building Supply sales have seen double-digit increases each year, and Scott is actively scouting locations for a second store in the area. His team is working with the Retail Performance experts at Do it Best Corp. to ensure the business is moving into the right market to achieve its growth plans. While every entrepreneur's story is unique, Scott's is a great example of making the most of every opportunity - starting with the spark of inspiration that started it all in a southern Virginia match factory.

"We rely on our relationship with Do it Best Corp. to keep product selection fresh. LBM doesn't have to be dull. We just have to keep our customers excited to come back and see what's new."
