Back in 1999, when Boone Creech and Cameron Finley decided to open their lumber business in a town with population 265, they admit there were skeptics. In hindsight, the decision to open Old Monroe Lumber & Rental in an affordable area near four rapidly growing counties was brilliant. What started as a four-employee operation with a pick-up truck and a gooseneck trailer has grown to 27 employees and annual growth of up to 30 percent.
Whatever it Takes
When Boone and Cameron were formulating their business plan, they adopted a startup mentality to identify competitive advantages and best practices. From the beginning, they were undeterred by national chain competitors, because they believed that people would always seek superior service and product knowledge. To that end, they adopted a motto of "Whatever it takes" and quickly built a loyal customer base.
A Top Facility
An important differentiator for Old Monroe is its 85,000-square-foot enclosed warehouse and lumber storage space. This allows them to take lumber and commodities positions when pricing is best, giving them the ability to serve their customers with the right product at the right time and at the right price. Old Monroe also features an impressive showroom filled with fully constructed vignettes of stairs, porches, siding, and roofing options and select product lines, including grills and power tools.

A Powerful Partnership
Old Monroe fully embraces their partnership with Do it Best Corp. as the total solution for their lumber and building material needs. Our St. Louis lumber reload center replenishes them with just-in-time product and they depend on our lumber futures program as a key market advantage. They know their Do it Best lumber traders’ expertise will help them buy right every time, especially for their SYP dimensional lumber and OSB panel needs.
They also depend on our building materials team for their structural fasteners, drywall, moldings, and windows and continue to discover added value through our numerous vendor partnerships and custom programs.
Rental Center
As independent member-owners of Do it Best Corp., Boone and Cameron have access to the co-op's expertise in the rental market. Their Do it Best Rental CenterTM has been one of the fastest growing segments of the business, increasing foot traffic and generating add-on sales.
Focus on People
Boone and Cameron also credit their success to their solid staff of associates. They have made a special effort to attract young people with a salary and benefit structure that provides a long-term career opportunity. They don't differentiate between outside and inside sales; rather, they empower their employees to serve customers in every area and build their success by simply doing "whatever it takes."
