Niece Lumber is a fourth-generation company serving a large area surrounding Lambertville, New Jersey. The company started as a lumber, coal and feed yard, and has evolved to become a full-service lumberyard and millwork operation, complemented by hardware, paint and an extensive design showroom.

A Strong Identity
In their market, the Niece Lumber name has a strong reputation with customers. Three years ago, realizing they were increasingly unhappy with the mandatory national branding and programs of their co-op of more than 20 years, owners Bruce and Marc Currie decided to make a fresh start with Do it Best Corp. and expand into hardware and home improvement products to ensure that they remain the first choice for remodelers in the region.

The Right Mix
Do it Best Corp. merchandising experts introduced the Niece Lumber team to Category Solutions to help bring organization to the store’s aisles and offer the right complement of the best products in every department. Right away, Niece Lumber saw significant increases in hardware sales simply
 from having the right merchandise mix for their customers. Category Solutions has been key to their ability to expand their inventory with favorable pricing and terms.

Store Redesign
Fully embracing the Category Solutions program led Bruce and Marc to their current project: a complete store redesign using a member-branded SignatureTM Store Design. They had tweaked the store so many times over the decades that it became clear they needed a modern store layout. Paired with an intensive Category Solutions and merchandising project, the store’s reorganization will create a better flow for customers and increase space for products without adding square footage.
